If Just For The Day

Twas the day after Thanksgiving
And all through the house,
Most everyone was miserable
Including the mouse.

For who would have thought
So much food could be eaten,
As the Cowboys were playing
And most surely were beaten.

And as I rest in my chair
With my tea by my side,
Someone’s pulling at my feet
To come join them outside!

Dozens of cousins
With uncles and aunts,
Running all through the yard
Getting stains on their pants.

Tossing the pigskin
Every which way they could,
They’re blocking and tackling
Maybe harder than they should.

And with a bump on the head
Then a knock on the knee,
One of my nieces approaches
Cause she wants me to see.

“Uncle Billy, Uncle Billy!
My booboo really hurts!
And my daddy won’t play
Cause he’s still got the squirts.”

Off the porch I do spring
To play ball with this girly,
Certainly, I can hang.
I mean, come on…surely.

And much to our surprise
I’m admittedly super,
More so than her dad
Who’s still on the pooper.

Thankful, for this day
Just playing in the grass,
And enjoying one another
Through each run and each pass.

Together, on this day
That comes once a year,
So grateful for the time,
Time so precious, so dear.

It’s Thanksgiving with family
With a ball in the yard,
It’s forgetting all the stuff
That makes life seem so hard.

If just for the day
“To the back of the line!”
Stuff competing for space
In your life and mine.

Let’s love on those near
And those we’ll miss from afar,
And show them how special
And loved, they so are.
